Transforming Education Through Paramparantarana Utsav
On 12th October 2024, a remarkable event took place that marked a significant moment in the journey of Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Gurukulam Group of Institutions. This event, known as the ‘Gurukulam Paramparatarana Utsav,’ celebrated tradition, wisdom, and the passing of guidance to future generations. It was the one-year anniversary of this Utsav, as well as the first anniversary of the Pradhaana Paalakas. This year, some new graduates have also taken up the responsibility, continuing the tradition of transformative leadership.
The word paramparatarana is derived from two Sanskrit terms: paramparā meaning lineage, and antaraṇa meaning to carry over. It highlights the importance of preserving knowledge, arts, and practices across generations. This tradition of responsible stewardship was revived by Sri Madhusudan Sai in 2015 with a clear vision – to empower students from underprivileged rural areas through free, values-based education and to prepare them to become the teachers and leaders of tomorrow.
At the heart of this vision is the revival of the ancient guru-guru paramparā a mentorship model where knowledge is passed down from teacher to teacher, ensuring continuity and growth. Last year, on the auspicious occasion of Vijaya Dashami, the first group of postgraduates from Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence stepped into their new roles as ‘Pradhaana Paalakas.’ These young men and women, in their twenties, embody the spirit of selfless service and responsibility.
The ‘Pradhaana Paalakas’ are more than just teachers; they are caretakers and protectors of the institution’s values and mission. They are tasked with carrying forward the transformative education they have received, passing it on to the next generation. This event symbolises the passing of the torch – or ‘Karvatya Danda’ – from one generation to the next, ensuring that the mission continues to thrive.
Sri Madhusudan Sai has always emphasised the importance of teachers being role models. He envisioned that these students would one day mentor others, creating a cycle of mentorship that sustains the mission. The event celebrated this vision, with Sri Madhusudan Sai expressing his pride in the new generation of leaders. He stressed that the mission is in safe hands, as these young teachers are ready to carry it forward with excellence.
The past year has been transformative for the ‘Pradhaana Paalakas’. For many, like Akhilan S R, the experience has been challenging but rewarding. His belief in Swami and support from elders kept him going. Others, like Anil Chandra, discovered their capacity for leadership, recognising it as something Swami had helped them uncover. The journey has deepened their sense of responsibility and spiritual connection, with Rakesh H K describing it as a path that clarified his purpose and strengthened his bond with the Divine.
Leadership, as Sri Madhusudan Sai teaches, is a shared responsibility, and the young Paalakas have embraced this. Shivaprasad reflected on how serving his community has been a blessing, while Chaitra G A highlighted the importance of empathy in her role, learning to see each student as an individual. Apoorva shared how managing crises during the year taught her to remain calm under pressure, a lesson that will undoubtedly serve her well in the future.
The event also celebrated the spirit of Vijaya Dashami, or ‘Simolanghan,’ which represents the victory of good over evil and the crossing of boundaries to achieve higher goals. The Paalakas, as torchbearers of this mission, now embody this spirit, defying limitations in their pursuit of a greater purpose. Their journey represents the victory of light over darkness, and their dedication to serving others will have a lasting impact on society.
As Sri Madhusudan Sai said, “Your success is my success, is the success of this mission, and the success of the sages and saints of this country.” This powerful message captures the essence of the Paramparatarana Utsav – the continuation of a legacy that will shape the future of education and society for generations to come.
