Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust Becomes the World’s Largest Free Morning Nutrition Programme

The Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust, the governing body for the nutrition initiatives of the Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission, is an initiative that aims to combat hunger and focuses on improving the nutritional intake of school children in government and government-aided schools, both in rural and urban areas. They have achieved a remarkable milestone by serving 10 million children across India.
To celebrate this significant achievement, the Trust hosted the ‘Power of Poshan’ award ceremony on September 12, 2024, at Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli, Chikkaballapur. Distinguished guests, including international cricketer Jonty Rhodes, Ms Tara Satyavathi – Director of IIMR, and Mr Y S Patil – IAS Commissioner from the Agriculture Department of Karnataka, gathered to recognise the invaluable contributions of corporate partners, farmers, and key stakeholders who have been instrumental in scaling up this essential nutrition program.
The need for such initiatives is critical in India, where malnutrition and mortality rates among children are alarmingly high. Sri Madhusudan Sai emphasises that it is fundamental for every child to receive proper nutrition, healthcare, and education without cost. He advocates for a collaborative approach, focusing on three key pillars: government (sarkāra), society (samāja), and organisations (saṁsthā). This comprehensive strategy aims to create a unified effort to address the nutritional needs of children, particularly those living in rural areas who often lack access to proper meals due to their families’ economic conditions.

The Annapoorna Trust’s programme was envisioned by Sri Madhusudan Sai and is supported by ten foundations, over 100 corporate partners, and around 1,000 farmers. Currently, the initiative reaches over 1 crore (10 million) children, with aspirations to serve 10 crore (100 million) in the future. “We started with one volunteer and 50 children, and now it has grown into this vast network,” said Sri Madhusudan Sai, highlighting the tremendous growth of the initiative. He urges everyone to contribute their efforts in feeding the diverse population of the country, stating, “We need to solve the problems we created by ourselves.”

In reflecting on the importance of compassion and community, he quoted Mahatma Gandhi, “If we start doing what we are capable of, not just what we are doing, all our problems will be solved.” By fostering a spirit of kindness and collaboration, we can work together to ensure that no child goes to school hungry, thereby transforming lives and building a healthier future for generations to come.
