SMSIMSR Receives NABH Entry-Level Accreditation — A Landmark Moment for Free Rural Healthcare

The Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR) has achieved Entry-Level Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) — one of India’s most prestigious national quality certifications for healthcare institutions.

This milestone is not merely an administrative achievement. It is a formal declaration that the care being delivered entirely free of cost to rural patients at SMSIMSR meets the same rigorous national standards of patient safety, infection control, and hospital management that govern India’s best hospitals.

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, established to uphold and continuously improve patient safety and quality of healthcare across the country. NABH is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua), placing it in a select group of globally recognised healthcare accreditation bodies.

To receive even Entry-Level NABH certification, a hospital must demonstrate compliance with national standards across three critical pillars:

• Patient Safety — rigorous systems ensuring patients are protected at every stage of care
• Infection Prevention and Control — robust protocols to prevent the spread of disease within the hospital environment
• Transparent Hospital Management — ethical, accountable, and well-documented systems for delivering and administering healthcare

The bar is high — and the numbers make that clear. Of the approximately 80,000 to 90,000 hospitals across India, only around 1.4% hold full NABH accreditation, and approximately 3% hold Entry-Level certification. SMSIMSR now joins that 3%.

Most hospitals that pursue NABH accreditation do so driven by commercial incentive — the certification attracts insurance tie-ups, medical tourism, and the confidence of paying patients. SMSIMSR’s motivation is entirely different.

Founded under the One World One Family Mission of Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, and inspired by the ancient Vedic principle of vasudhaiva kutumbakam — the world is one family — SMSIMSR exists for a singular purpose: to provide world-class medical care to the rural poor, completely free of charge.

There is no billing counter at SMSIMSR. No insurance required. No conditions placed on who receives care. Every patient, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or financial status, is treated as family.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2023, SMSIMSR is India’s first free rural medical college. It offers free tuition, free accommodation, free food, and free textbooks to medical students, many of whom come from underserved backgrounds. In return, graduates commit to serve in medically underserved areas, directly addressing India’s critical shortage of rural doctors.

Speaking on the accreditation, Dr. Padmashree, Medical Superintendent of SMSIMSR, reflected on what this certification represents within the larger vision: “Under the guidance of Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, and inspired by the spirit of One World One Family, we work to provide world-class medical care to the poor, free of charge. This Entry-Level accreditation is only the first step — we are confident of achieving full NABH accreditation in the near future.”

The institution views this certification not as a final destination, but as the beginning of a formal, structured quality journey, one that will carry SMSIMSR towards full NABH accreditation and the highest standards of healthcare excellence.
