Celebrating one year of smiles

The Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital in Nasese, Fiji recently marked its one-year anniversary since its establishment last year. The hospital has made an immense contribution to Fiji’s healthcare system, and Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka presided over the ceremony to acknowledge this achievement.

Before the opening of the hospital, families with children suffering from congenital heart disease had to travel overseas for treatment, costing more than $100,000. With no facility available in Fiji or the Pacific, it was a difficult and expensive process. However, with the establishment of the state-of-the-art pediatrics hospital, families in Fiji and across the Pacific can now access life-saving cardiac treatment for their children.

Serving the children and families of the Pacific Region

The Sai Prema Foundation, played a significant role in building the general outpatient facility, which focuses on mother and child care. The hospital has hosted six visiting teams over the past year, consisting of medical professionals from the United States, Australia, India, Oman, and New Zealand, who volunteered their time to operate on children with congenital heart disease. The hospital is one of the first in the region, making it a vital resource for children in Fiji and the Pacific.

The hospital has been able to help numerous children, including nine children from the Solomon Islands and four from Kiribati, as well as those from Fiji. In just one year, 214 lives have been saved, with 141 children receiving life-saving heart surgeries. The Hospital Director, Dr. Krupali Tappoo, noted that this achievement is not just about saving lives but also about bringing hope and joy to 214 families who have experienced love and support.

The Gift of Life Ceremony

During the ceremony, 21 medical professional volunteers and 21 children who underwent successful heart surgeries were presented with “gift-of-life” certificates, acknowledging their contribution to the hospital’s success.

In conclusion, the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital is a remarkable achievement for Fiji and the Pacific region. The hospital has made an enormous contribution to the healthcare system, providing life-saving treatment to children who would have previously had to travel overseas. The hospital is a testament to the power of charitable organizations and volunteers, who have worked tirelessly to make this facility a reality.
