Navaratri Celebrations at Sathya Sai Grama: A Spiritual Symphony of Power, Purity, and Purpose

The festival opened with the commencement of the Athi Rudra Maha Yajna, a sacred fire ritual whose flames and chants filled the air with divine energy. The Navaratri Homa and the Durga Pooja followed this, where a magnificent idol of Maa Durga was worshipped with heartfelt devotion.

Honourable Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Smt Shobha Karandlaje, graced the occasion. She praised Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, acknowledging his work in continuing the legacy of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba through a mission of free healthcare, education, and nutrition. In his divine address, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai described Sathya Sai Grama as “a heaven on earth, filled with divine grace and blessings.”

The evening was dedicated to worshipping Maa Shailaputri, the embodiment of strength and grounding energy. Rituals like the Sahasra Modaka Ganapati Homa and Durga Puja were performed, accompanied by the vibrant beats of Bengali dhakis. Sadguru’s discourse emphasised the principle of “Paropakaram idam shariram”—the body exists for the service of others—and reminded devotees that true service is the path to God. The Hans Foundation was also honoured with the CSR Circle of Honour award for its transformative work in paediatric cardiac care, NICU services, and cochlear implant surgeries, providing hope and healing to countless children.

The day concluded with a spellbinding Carnatic recital by Vidushi Smt Aruna Sairam. Her performance was not just music; it was a form of surrender. Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai praised her unique ability to lose herself in the “bhava” or emotion of the music, stating, “That alone touches my heart.”

On the second day, the focus shifted to Maa Brahmacharini, who represents penance, knowledge, and inner strength. The Durga Homa was performed to invoke the goddess’s power, helping to cleanse the mind of anger, ego, and jealousy. Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai reminded everyone that true knowledge purifies the mind and that Sathya Sai Grama serves as a modern gurukula, a centre for spiritual learning.

His address on surrender resonated deeply. He explained that Devi Durga helps us cross the ocean of saṃsāra (the cycle of life and death), but only when we let go of our ego and place our complete faith in her. He urged a permanent relationship with God, one that is not a “situationship” dependent on circumstances. “The heart is a single sofa, not a musical chair. It is meant only for God,” he said, urging students to cultivate this sacred bond.

The evening was a beautiful display of Karnataka’s rich folk traditions at the One World One Family World Cultural Festival 2025 with Janapada Vaibhava. Presented by Kala Kadamba Art Centre, the stage came alive with the powerful storytelling of Yakshagana of Mahishasura Mardhini, the thunderous rhythms of Dollu Kunitha, and the spirited movements of Veeragase. The graceful Pooja Kunitha and the fierce Bedara Vesha depicting Lord Shiva’s form captivated the audience, while the festive beats of Tamate lifted every heart, showcasing that tradition is not just preserved but vibrantly lived and celebrated.

Day three honoured Maa Chandraghanta, the goddess of bravery and inner strength. The sacred Pavamāna Homa was performed to purify the body, speech, and mind, dispelling fear and negativity. Adding to the spiritual significance, 24 sacred kalashas (pots) consecrated with waters from holy rivers were installed, symbolising cosmic harmony and a prayer for peace.

The celebration was graced by Avadhootha Sri Vinay Guruji, who praised Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai as a “living embodiment of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy, ‘My Life is My Message.’” He highlighted that Sadguru’s work speaks louder than words, inspiring others to walk the path of compassion.

In his address, Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai highlighted that poverty and illiteracy are the modern-day “Mahishasuras.” He reminded everyone that “Your hands are the divine hands through which Mother Goddess works,” emphasising that selfless service is the greatest power on Earth.

The event also honoured corporate partners and presented CSR Circle of Honour awards to Thoucentric, a global management consulting firm; Mavenir Systems, Inc., a telecom software leader; and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). NPCI’s CSR support notably funded 100 paediatric cardiac surgeries, providing renewed health and hope to underprivileged children. The One World One Family Global Leadership Award was presented to Mr Chintalapati Srinivasa Raju, founder of iLabs Group and Sri City, for his pioneering work in higher education and infrastructure.

The day’s music continued to inspire with a sublime performance by the Rudrapatnam Brothers, joined by Dr R N Sreelatha, Smt Sangeetha Tharanathan, Sri Sanjay Tharanathan, and Sri S P Ananthapadmanabha. Their recital, steeped in the timeless beauty of the Alathur tradition, was a testament to music as a form of divine offering. Sadguru concluded by saying, “Anyone with selfless love and pure intentions for the last and the least in their heart is divine. What they choose to do will come to happen because they have God on their side.”

The first three days of Navaratri at Sathya Sai Grama have been a powerful testament to the festival’s timeless relevance. Through sacred rituals, moving discourses, and captivating performances, the celebration has woven together the threads of spirituality, culture, and selfless service, reminding everyone that true devotion blossoms in a heart dedicated to serving others.
