i to I- instinct to Intuition Youth Retreat, Malaysia

Navigating Instinct and Intuition
In our fast-paced world, the concepts of instinct and intuition often come into play, guiding our decisions and shaping our behaviours. Understanding these innate tendencies can be particularly beneficial for the youth, as they navigate their paths and seek personal transformation. A recent 3-day international transformative youth retreat, the ‘i to I – instinct to Intuition,’ offered young delegates a profound opportunity to reflect on this theme, facilitating an exploration of self-awareness and the higher self.
What Are Instincts?
Instincts are ingrained tendencies that promote certain behaviours, often leading individuals toward established patterns. Grounded in natural impulses like self-survival, self-gratification, and self-assertion, instincts often steer us based on instinctual drives. They can motivate actions tied to self-importance and domination, leading us to engage with the world primarily through our immediate desires and needs.
What is Intuition?
In contrast to instinct, intuition represents a deeper, often unarticulated knowing—an inner voice that provides insights without the need for reasoning or concrete evidence. As one witness to the journey of the soul, intuition is seen as the ‘soundless voice of the divine from within.’ It urges individuals to listen to that internal wisdom prompting them toward choices aligned with their higher purpose.
Reflections from the "i to I" Youth Retreat
On 19th October 2024, the retreat commenced with an invigorating morning session set against the tranquil landscapes of Anand Ashram in Janda Baik, Malaysia. Delegates from a diverse array of countries, including Australia, India, Indonesia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and Malaysia, converged for this transformative experience.
The morning began with a warm welcome address from Mr. Ayavoo, the founder of the Sai Ananda Foundation Malaysia, who set a positive tone for the retreat. This was followed by a keynote speech from Sri B. N. Narasimha Murthy, Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence. He emphasised the retreat’s importance in guiding the youth from their lower selves—the ‘I’—toward their divine essence—the ‘I.’
As the day unfolded, the atmosphere charged with energy reached its zenith with the arrival of Sri Madhusudan Sai. A highlight of the event was the ceremonial inauguration of the Paramahamsa Pavilion, featuring Vedic chanting and ceremonial lighting that evoked rich traditions of the past. In his inaugural address, Sri Madhusudan Sai referenced the muṇḍakopaniṣad, offering profound insights into the relationship between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. He illustrated this connection with the metaphor of two birds in a tree—one enjoying the fruits of karma while the other remains a detached witness—capturing the essence of balancing instinctual drives with higher intuitive wisdom.
Throughout the following three days, the retreat served as a wellspring of inspiration and upliftment for all participants. Engaging question-and-answer sessions with Sri Madhusudan Sai sparked meaningful dialogues, allowing attendees to deepen their understanding and connection to the theme explored. Esteemed speakers, Swami Supriyananda from the Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia and Pujya Shri Syamalanathan Iyengar from Dharma Shakti Vedanta Ashram, shared their wisdom on recognising the presence of God in nature and the interconnectedness of the universe. Central to this exploration was the idea that God has chosen each individual for a specific path, urging them to seek the Divine within rather than outside themselves. By cultivating practices of selflessness, gratitude, and daily reflection—including prāṇāyāma—participants were encouraged to foster a deeper connection with God and enhance their overall happiness and harmony.
While the esteemed GuruMaa Annai Shree Kriyalakshmi Deviyar graced the retreat with her presence, the evenings were alive with vibrant musical performances by the youth from Sai Ananda Foundation Malaysia and Kriyalakshmi Gurukul. Each night, these performances enriched the atmosphere, celebrating the spirit of community and artistic expression as participants shared in the joy of music and togetherness.
Moreover, youth representatives from various countries shared insights about their service activities, showcasing the impact of their efforts. Attendees were also inspired by powerful speeches that highlighted the self-transformation journeys of young adults.
Breakout sessions encouraged delegates to engage in practical discussions focused on moving from instinctual responses to intuitive guidance, while tasks designed for immersion in nature helped participants forge a deeper reconnection with themselves and their surroundings.
An Intuitive Journey Ahead
The “i to I” Youth Retreat isn’t just a gathering; it represents a crucial step in the spiritual journey for many young individuals. By engaging with the dualities of instinct and intuition, participants were provided tools to navigate their inner landscapes—tools that are vital for personal growth and for realising their potential in alignment with a divine purpose.
As the retreat progresses, the aim remains clear: to help youths foster a deeper understanding of their instincts while developing a stronger connection to their intuitive selves, ultimately guiding them toward a more fulfilled and purposeful life. Through collective reflection and shared experiences, they are not merely participants; they are pioneers on the path of self-discovery, equipped to illuminate their paths and those of others as they transform from ‘i’ to ‘I’.
