Hearts United: Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani’s Visionary Partnership with Children’s HeartLink

Shared commitment to improving access to paediatric cardiac care

A Milestone Collaboration to Transform Pediatric Cardiac Care in India

The Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Heart Care (SSSSH), founded by Sri Madhusudan Sai, is honoured to announce its partnership with Children’s HeartLink. This collaboration, under the visionary leadership of Sri Madhusudan Sai, is a significant milestone as SSSSH joins Children’s HeartLink’s global family of hospital partners. It is a testament to the shared commitment to improving access to paediatric cardiac care for children born with congenital heart disease.

Jackie Boucher, President of Children’s HeartLink, expressed, “This is a unique partnership for Children’s HeartLink in India. As a charity hospital, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Heart Care is dedicated to providing vital medical care to children with heart disease, care they might not otherwise receive.”

Located in the heart of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, SSSSH, founded by Sri Madhusudan Sai has been a beacon of hope since its inception in May 2019. As a charitable hospital exclusively dedicated to paediatric cardiac care, it has provided life-saving services to children with congenital heart disease entirely free of charge.

In 2022 alone, the dedicated team at SSSSH screened nearly 4,000 children for congenital heart disease and performed over 1,000 surgeries and interventions. Notably, approximately 60% of these surgeries were conducted on infants less than one year old.

However, it is disheartening to acknowledge that every year, an estimated 240,000 babies are born with congenital heart disease (CHD) in India, requiring 144,297 CHD procedures on infants. Despite the tireless efforts of paediatric cardiac care teams, an alarming 90% of these infants in need of heart care do not receive treatment.

The partnership with Children’s HeartLink represents a multi-year commitment to bridging this gap. It connects SSSSH with medical volunteers from Children’s Mercy Kansas City Hospital, who will provide invaluable mentoring and training. Together, the aim is to expand the reach of the paediatric heart care team, enabling them to screen and treat more children with heart disease and empowering other heart care teams in the region with the latest techniques and knowledge to save lives and prevent avoidable deaths.

Dr. Snehal Kulkarni, renowned Paediatric Cardiologist, emphasised, “This partnership shall bring in the latest medical expertise and know-how techniques from reputable paediatric cardiac specialists associated with Children’s HeartLink and Children’s Mercy Kansas City Hospital to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Heart Care. This will help in providing world-class paediatric cardiac care to poor and needy children who are treated totally free at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Heart Care.”

While Maharashtra, where SSSSH is located, boasts a thriving economy and a high concentration of private healthcare providers, healthcare disparities, especially in the public sector, persist. The collaboration with Children’s HeartLink is poised to address these disparities and enhance the healthcare landscape in the region. With a total of 100 beds, including 10 in the Intensive Care Unit and 7 in the Cardiac Care Unit, SSSSH is part of the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Trust, extending its services to patients referred from centres in Raipur and Palwal.

Sathya Sai Sanjeevani is a chain of Pediatric Cardiac Hospitals in five states of India. Dr. Snehal Kulkarni continued, “While the five centres do over 5,000 surgeries and interventions annually with a wide spectrum, this partnership can help upgrade the skills of doctors, nurses, and technicians with the latest techniques in the world in Paediatric Cardiac Care and, in turn, help make this quality healthcare available totally free for the poor and needy children.”

In conclusion, SSSSH expresses deep gratitude for this partnership and looks forward to saving even more young lives together with Children’s HeartLink. The collaboration holds great promise in addressing the pressing need for paediatric cardiac care in India and making a positive impact on the healthcare landscape.
