Grassroots Innovation Awards Celebrate Sustainable Agricultural Solutions
On October 7, 2024, the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence (SSSUHE) hosted the Grassroots Innovation Awards at Sathya Sai Grama, Muddenahalli. This event marked the culmination of a year-long competition, where two exceptional innovators were honoured for their contributions to society, particularly in enhancing agricultural practices and promoting sustainability.
Innovation at the Heart of Progress
Innovation is essential for our livelihood, shaping every aspect of our lives. From healthcare to technology, it has made things easier, faster, and more efficient. In particular, innovation in agriculture ensures food security and sustainability, which is crucial for our future. India, being an agricultural country with diverse climates and a variety of crops, has immense potential for innovation in this field.
SSSUHE: Nurturing Grassroots Innovation
At the heart of Sri Madhusudan Sai’s mission lies a profound commitment to uplifting underserved communities and fostering sustainable development. This vision comes to life at SSSUHE, which has become a vibrant innovation hub dedicated to nurturing grassroots initiatives that truly make a difference. Through the Innovation and Incubation Centre for Excellence (IIC), SSSUHE empowers individuals to explore creative solutions that tackle the real-world challenges faced by their communities.
The IIC specifically focuses on developing grassroots innovations that directly serve the underserved. The centre looks for solutions that are not only impactful but also scalable and affordable, ensuring that the benefits can reach a wider population.
The Awardees and Their Innovations
Sri Sharanabasappa Patil: Honoured for his innovative Jeevamrutha mixing device, which automates the mixing of organic fertilisers. This device has benefited around 60 farmers in his region, enhancing productivity and sustainability. Sri Patil has also developed tools for precise water management and crop maintenance.
Sri Anil Balanja: Recognized for transforming traditional farming by introducing around 800 different exotic fruit varieties from around the world. His efforts promote biodiversity and sustainable agriculture while empowering local farmers to cultivate high-value crops, thereby increasing their income stability.
Each awardee received a cash prize of ₹50,000 and a certificate of recognition, aimed at supporting their ongoing projects and inspiring further creativity.
Distinguished Guests and Visionary Words
The event was graced by Sri Biswaji Daimary, Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, as the chief guest. Sri Madhusudan Sai emphasised the importance of rural innovation, stating, “India lives in its villages, these two persons are examples of this. They do it for setting a right example in society.” His vision reflected the importance of innovative thinking in driving positive change globally.

Both award winners have expressed their eagerness to collaborate with SSSUHE to further develop and implement their innovations. This partnership between grassroots innovators and the university promises to bring about more sustainable and impactful solutions for rural communities.
