Exploring the Confluence of Buddhism and Vedanta

Sri Madhusudan Sai recently visited the peaceful Jethawanarama Forest Monastery in Ingiriya, Sri Lanka, as the honoured chief guest of a special programme. Speaking to a gathering of Buddhist monks and followers, he shared simple yet profound wisdom on spiritual growth and the joy of serving others.

What is the Jethawanarama Forest Monastery?
The Jethawanarama Forest Monastery is a tranquil haven in Ingiriya, dedicated to practising and sharing the timeless teachings of Lord Buddha. This sacred place combines spiritual growth with acts of kindness, offering free education, healthcare and community services. It stands as a shining example of how spiritual teachings can improve lives and bring harmony to society.
Empowering Unity Through Spiritual Harmony
Sri Madhusudan Sai explained the importance of surrendering to the Divine, the dharma and the sangha. He highlighted how true surrender requires patience, effort and faith over many lifetimes. Drawing on the wisdom of Buddha and Krishna, he spoke of letting go of the ego to find inner peace.
“To surrender to the Divine, to the master, to the dharma, does not happen overnight. It may take several lifetimes to come to that point where we are willing to let go and surrender ourselves.”
Challenges in Modern Spiritual Practices
Sri Madhusudan Sai encouraged young people to embrace spirituality, despite the distractions of modern life like digital technology. He praised the Monastery for its role in inspiring the youth to live with compassion and mindfulness.
“Fifty per cent of the world is young; they need to hear this and experience this. If we wait for them to come, we would be failing in our duty.”
Fostering Mental Well-Being
He delved into the importance of mental health, emphasising how a peaceful mind can lead to a healthy body. By adopting spiritual practices, he explained, individuals can find clarity, reduce stress, and avoid many illnesses.
“When the mind is calm, the body follows,” he noted, adding that the wisdom offered at the Monastery can be a source of healing for today’s fast-paced world.

Promoting Inclusive Spirituality
Sri Madhusudan Sai praised the Monastery for creating opportunities for women to explore spirituality. He recognised how rare it is for women to be given the freedom to choose this path and called it a true service to humanity.
“Of all the rights denied to women, the right to choose a spiritual path is the most difficult. Creating sanctuaries for them is a great service.”
A Vision for the Future
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s vision for the Monastery is both hopeful and inspiring. He described it as a seed that, with care, would grow into a tree spreading compassion, wisdom, and kindness far and wide.
He encouraged everyone to work together, comparing this unity to rivers flowing into the ocean—a collective effort that could transform the world.
“Let us come together to create a world where wisdom and kindness unite us all,” he said with conviction.
A Shared Commitment to Service
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s visit created a deep bond between his humanitarian mission and the Monastery’s selfless work. This shared vision of service and spirituality shows how working together can transform lives and will bring us closer to our mission of being One World, One Family.
