Bridging Borders to Save Children’s Lives

Highlighting the institute’s mission, Sri Madhusudan Sai spoke about the profound responsibility to serve humanity by providing high-quality healthcare to the underprivileged. He reflected on the power of collaboration, stating:

“Partnerships are the only way to solve the problems of the world. No one person can solve them alone. When everyone comes together, even the impossible becomes possible.”

Sri Madhusudan Sai celebrated the dedicated efforts of the HLH team and their integration into the institute’s vision, calling it “one of the most cherished partnerships of the year.” He acknowledged the importance of global unity, drawing attention to the contributions of medical professionals from across the world who have joined hands to serve humanity.

He shared a personal anecdote about how inspired he was as a young student by the story of Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the pioneer of heart transplants. “How wonderful would it be,” he recalled thinking, “if these medical marvels could become accessible to everyone in India.” Today, that dream is being realised in a rural village in Karnataka, where life-saving paediatric cardiac surgeries are performed free of charge for families who could never afford such treatments.

The fourth paediatric cardiac camp witnessed over 22 complex cardiac procedures, including ground-breaking hybrid surgeries. Dr C S Hiremath, the Chief Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon of SMSIMSR elaborated on the medical challenges faced and the innovations employed. One notable case involved a baby weighing just 3.2 kg, diagnosed with Swiss Cheese VSD—an intricate condition with multiple holes in the heart. For the first time, a hybrid approach combining catheterisation and open-heart surgery was used successfully at the institute.

Dr Branko Mimic, a Senior Paediatric Surgeon from the UK, expressed heartfelt admiration for the institute’s work. Reflecting on the team’s dedication and the infrastructure available, he remarked:

“The intensive care unit is well-equipped, the operating theatre is state-of-the-art, and the staff are highly trained and motivated. It is rare to find such a combination, especially in rural areas. This place feels like home to us.”

He highlighted the collaborative nature of the effort, emphasising that the support of international volunteers complemented the expertise of the local team. According to him, these camps exemplify how global partnerships can amplify healthcare outcomes, benefiting children who would otherwise lack access to such advanced procedures.

Sri Madhusudan Sai underscored how innovation and selflessness drive the institute’s success. He noted that technological advancements, combined with the team’s tireless commitment, allow the institute to achieve what once seemed impossible. He shared inspiring stories of the institute’s work beyond India, including the establishment of a cath lab in Sri Lanka that has already conducted over 2,000 interventions and a recent HLH camp in Fiji that provided critical care to children in the region.

Sri Madhusudan Sai also highlighted the dual mission of the institute: to save lives and to train the next generation of medical professionals.

“Knowledge is the only wealth that grows when shared. This institute not only performs surgeries but also builds capacities, training the next generation to carry this mission forward.”

The impact of the camp extended far beyond the medical outcomes. Sri Madhusudan Sai eloquently described how every heart surgery transforms not only the child but also their family and the caregivers. He urged everyone to reflect on the privileges they enjoy and to practice gratitude daily:

“Count your blessings, and count them again. Gratitude alone can transform humanity, inspiring us to give and share with others. This cycle of giving creates goodness that spreads across the world.”

As part of the paediatric cardiac camp, the Chiranjeevi Bhava ceremony celebrated the recovery and resilience of young patients who underwent life-saving surgeries. Families shared emotional stories of hope and gratitude, exemplified by children like Baby Nivedita, Varalakshmi, and Janvika—each now on the path to a healthy and vibrant life. This heartfelt event symbolised not just the success of medical interventions but also the transformative power of compassion and collaboration, touching the lives of children and their families forever.

The institute plans to conduct more paediatric cardiac camps in the coming months, building toward the centenary celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. With a vision to become a global centre of excellence in cardiac care and training, the institute is laying the foundation for a future where no child suffers due to a lack of medical care.

Sri Madhusudan Sai concluded by expressing his heartfelt appreciation for the HLH team and the institute’s staff, calling their selfless service “the most powerful force on earth.” He invited more partnerships to join this mission, saying:

“Good work is always rewarded with more good work. Together, we can create a world where every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the chance to live a full and healthy life.”
