Be Selfless

In the previous article, we learnt that we are all connected and responsible for the happiness of each other. We cannot be a happy individual in an unhappy family, a happy family in an unhappy community, a happy community in an unhappy country, or a happy country in an unhappy world. Just because the hole is on the other end of the boat it cannot be ignored lest all should sink.

Thus, the biggest lesson from the bhagavad gītā is that one should perform their duties selflessly for the benefit of all, without attachment to the results. It teaches us to act with the right attitude and understanding, focusing on the present moment, and doing what is right, regardless of the outcome.

To be selfless, one must cultivate a mindset of surrender and detachment. It involves letting go of selfish desires and ego, and instead focusing on serving others and the greater good. One can practice selflessness by performing acts of kindness, helping those in need, and putting others’ needs before their own. It also involves developing qualities like compassion, empathy, and generosity. By practicing selflessness, we can purify our hearts and minds, and ultimately experience true happiness and spiritual growth.

I always say, “one selfless and compassionate act a day, keeps the ego away”.

Before you go to bed every night, ask yourself this question – “Did I consciously engage in a selfless act today?” The one who thinks of others before oneself is selfless.
