A New Chapter in Rural Education as Sri Madhusudan Sai Visits Dharmapuram Adheenam, Tamil Nadu
Access to education in rural India remains a significant challenge, with economic barriers leading to high dropout rates, particularly at the secondary level, where 12.6% of students leave school (UDISE+ 2021-22). Girls in rural areas face even greater obstacles, often leaving school to support their families financially or due to societal pressures. Families in these regions struggle to afford school fees, uniforms, and books, making education a luxury rather than a right.
To address these challenges, the Bharat Rashtra Nirman Vidyarthi Nidhi (BRNVN) scholarship was introduced by Sri Madhusudan Sai under the aegis of the Prashanthi Balamandira Trust in collaboration with Rashtriya Sewa Bharati. Launched on 23 November 2021, in Karnataka, the programme has since provided financial assistance to over 7,800 economically disadvantaged children, nearly half of them being girls.
Revolutionising Education Access in Tamil Nadu
On 18 January 2025, during his visit to the Dharmapuram Adheenam in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, Sri Madhusudan Sai expanded the programme to include over 2,000 students this next school year in the Adheenam’s rural schools.
A Meeting of Visionary Minds
A simple yet profound event at the Dharmapuram Adheenam marked this expansion. Supported by the Rotarians of Mayiladuthurai, the gathering began with a devotional Thevaram hymn extolling Lord Shiva.
Sri Kumaraswamy Thambiran Swamigal, the head of Dharmapuram Adheenam, then expressed his admiration for the free initiatives led by Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission (SMSGHM).
Sri Meenakshisundaram Swami described the collaboration as the union of two like-minded missions, stating that “service is an expression of spirituality.” Inspired by the mission’s scale and impact, they invited Sri Madhusudan Sai to join efforts with the Adheenam, where plans were revealed to establish a hospital – similar to Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR) – dedicated to Lord Shiva and to expand educational services to reach at least 100,000 children.
In his address, Sri Mahasannidhanam Swami praised SMSGHM, describing it as divinely inspired. Quoting Sri Subramania Bharati – a renowned Indian poet – he emphasised the importance of education and nutrition for nation-building and commended Sri Madhusudan Sai for his path of selfless service.
The Dharmapuram Adheenam has a long-standing tradition of contributing to society beyond spirituality. While fostering Shaiva Siddhanta through Tamil devotional Thevarams and Thiruvachakam literature, they also run rural educational institutions providing values-based education ‘from KG to PG’ for over 17,000 students across 36 institutions.
A Pledge to Uplift Lives
Sri Madhusudan Sai, beginning his speech with a heartfelt “Nandri” in Tamil, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Tamil Nadu. He reiterated his commitment to his guru, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s vision that nutrition, education, and healthcare are fundamental rights for all children. Stressing the transformative power of educating girls, he remarked, “When you educate a girl, you educate a family, a village, and a nation.”

It inspires a collective spirit of service, proving that when kindred hearts and missions come together, their combined efforts can light a fire of transformation, spreading waves of hope and goodness that uplift rural communities and reshape society for generations to come. With countless students already benefitting from this initiative, the dream of a brighter, more equitable India is steadily becoming a reality.
